Easter has arrived ahead of schedule at Vasse Primary School, thanks to some special new additions to the Chicken Club. After last year’s successful hatching of 22 chicks—including Australorps and Olive Egger × Easter Egger crosses—students selected two standout pullets, Potato and Nina-Caramel, to join the school flock.
These hens have proven to be as unique as they are gentle. Potato delights us with soft pastel pink-toned eggs, while Nina-Caramel produces rich olive green coloured eggs, rewarding the patience and care students have shown throughout their journey. From incubating fertile eggs to waiting over 20 weeks to identify hens, students have experienced every stage of raising chickens.
Beyond practical skills, the experience has also strengthened students’ empathy and emotional awareness. Drawing on their RULER (Emotional Intelligence) lessons, they’ve carefully supported the hens’ integration into the flock—learning when to step in and when to let natural behaviours unfold. The Chicken Club continues to foster responsibility, confidence, and a harmonious environment for all.
