Kindy & Pre-Primary

Kindergarten Curriculum

At VPS play is carefully and thoughtfully planned and prepared around the child’s individual needs and developmental growth. The Kindy program aims to develop intellectual, physical, social and emotional development through various learning areas.

Steered by two important documents; The Early Years Framework, and The Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines, the children will learn skills, knowledge and ideas through their play building on existing knowledge, skills and interests.

Our program is supportive, but it is also challenging. It is a balance of:

  • Child-directed play where the child chooses how, when, with, what and with whom to engage.
  • Teacher-guided play where the teacher manages the play environment to achieve specific outcomes.
  • Intentional teaching where the teacher plans and delivers explicit instruction to achieve specific outcomes.

Walker Learning

Walker Learning is a holistic approach to teaching and learning that has an emphasis on developing students to become independent learners, critical and creative thinkers and build resilience and a sense of self.

This play-based approach was implemented for Kindergarten to Year 2 classrooms several years ago with the aim of enhancing the schools’ learning environments. It provides our students with a balance of investigative play-based learning and hands on experiences, that is supported with structured and explicit teaching programs.

A strong focus is placed on Literacy and numeracy skills allowing students to practise these skills to real life situations.

Our aim is to develop the whole child and prepare them for the future by fostering soft skills such as communication, problem solving, conflict resolution, decision making, leadership, teamwork and responsibility.

Our Transition Program enables children to make a positive transition into their next year level.
