Emotional Intelligence - RULER

Emotional Intelligence - RULER

Wellbeing is a holistic approach embedded within the cultural context of Vasse Primary School (VPS). It is the overall emotional/social and mental health of students at VPS, which is essential for their success in learning and life.

At VPS, we firmly believe that for all children to achieve academic, social, and personal success, they must possess strong emotional intelligence skills. Research (Swinburne University) has shown that emotional intelligence is related to:

  • Academic success
  • Mental wellbeing
  • Coping skills
  • Reduction in bullying and classroom disruptive behaviour
  • Sporting performance
  • Leadership

VPS teaches emotional intelligence through Yale University’s RULER program (Recognise, Understand, Label, Express and Regulate). RULER is a whole school approach that explicitly teaches self and social awareness, and develops emotional regulation.

Vasse monitors student mental health, wellbeing and engagement through the South Australian Education Department’s Wellness and Engagement Census (WEC). Students in Year 4-6 complete the WEC in August of each year.
