Mentors Build Confidence for Students

Year 6 student Isaac couldn’t wait to collect his ‘new’ bike from school at the end of Term 2.

Together with his mentor Malcolm, Isaac had spent the term learning how to renovate an old bike from scratch.

The project’s aim was to strip down an old Avanti, mountain bike and re-assemble to ‘new’ condition (as far as possible).

Malcolm said it required removing all parts, cleaning, checking and replacing parts as required.

“We had to clean the frame and remove the rust before repainting with spray-paint. Parts were then re-assembled, new brake land gear cables replaced, brakes adjusted, front and rear Deraillier gears, before finally road testing and making some final adjustments”.

Malcolm said the exercise provided Isaac with valuable lessons on how to use basic tools for bike maintenance and repairs, patience, sustainable practices, as well as gaining a huge sense of achievement.

Principal, Alex Cameron said Vasse Primary School was very fortunate to have some wonderful volunteers like Malcolm who has been volunteering with Vasse for 22 years.

“They assist selected students through the EdConnect Mentor program on a one-to-one basis by encouraging and guiding them to achieve their full potential.

“Mentoring can increase self-esteem, confidence land develop improved life skills”.

We think he’s done an amazing job, well done Isaac!
