The experience, in Hayley’s words…
In April, I attended tryouts for the Girls Under 12 WA State AFLW Team that would travel to NSW to compete in the 2023 State Junior AFLW Championships. I was selected to represent our state in the team of 23 girls.
During the competition in early August, we played 6 games in 6 days, 4 of which we won. My main position (on the field) was centre half-back, which was new to me. I was lucky to float forward for a few quarters and become our team’s leading goal kicker. Throughout the week my team and I turned our coach into a swiftie, went bowling, learned about the native Aboriginal people, and got to join in a few dances. We also went to the arcade and the laser tag arena. Recovery sessions in the freezing cold pool were not a favourite activity with us girls (sorry to the people staying in the hotel!).
It was an incredible experience and I have made some lifelong friends and brought home a medal, something I will remember for the rest of my life.
By the way, if you are ever visiting the Lavington Sports Ground, BUY THE DOUGHNUTS!
