On Thursday 24 October, our Year 1 students had a truly enriching experience at Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse, blending history, culture, and nature into a day filled with exploration and discovery.
Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Josh from Koomal Dreaming, who guided us on a scenic walk up to the lighthouse and the whale-watching platform. Along the way, students were fascinated to learn how to identify local animal tracks to become mini-botanists, discovering native plants used by the Wadandi people for food, medicine, and tools.
At the whale-watching platform, Josh introduced us to Noongar names for many local animals, plants, and landmarks. He then shared the Dreamtime story of Mammung the Whale, captivating the students with this meaningful tale of connection to land and sea.
Our journey continued to the Koomal Dreaming meeting place, where traditional tools such as spears, shields, and axes were displayed. Students listened intently as Josh explained how the Wadandi people utilized kangaroo skin and other resources, in their daily lives. A special highlight was the didgeridoo performance by Josh, with our students joining in using tapping sticks. The girls learned the emu dance while the boys practiced the kangaroo dance, creating a lively scene as everyone embraced the movements and sounds of Wadandi culture.
As a treat, we enjoyed Lemon Myrtle and Wattleseed Biscuits that the students had made earlier in the week. These tasty bites were a delicious way to connect our classroom learning to the day’s experiences.
To round out our adventure, we sketched the iconic lighthouse and wrapped up with a visit to the lighthouse museum, where we explored its rich maritime history.
After a day brimming with new experiences, the bus ride home was quiet as students dozed off, tired but fulfilled. It was a fantastic day, and we can’t wait to see how our Year 1s bring these memories into future learning adventures!

Lemon Myrtle and/or Wattle Seed Biscuits Recipe
- 250g raw sugar
- 250g butter, melted
- 500g self-raising flour
- 4 eggs
- 25g dried Lemon Myrtle and/or ground Wattle Seed
Combine all dry ingredients in a bowl.
In another bowl whisk together eggs and melted butter. Make a well in the dry ingredients. Pour in the wet ingredients.
Stir until just combined. Roll into balls. Place on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Press lightly on top with a floured fork. Bake in a moderate oven for 12 to 15 mins or until golden.
